PowerBall Lottery Now Awards Bigger Jackpots

PowerBall - which is considered to be the king of lotteries in America - is making some changes to its gambling and ticketing policies.  The changes, which have been designed to create bigger jackpots and higher valued prizes, will be going into effect Sunday, August 28.

Ticketing changes now include an option that will let bettors wager an extra $1 on top of the original ticket price.  Similar to a bonus multiplier in a casino slot machine, The Power Play option multiplies a tickets winnings by up to 5x if five numbers are correctly picked.

The other change is an increase in the average jackpot size, which used to be $10 million, but has now been raised to $15 million.  In order to make this happen, two additional numbers were added to the Power Play draw, which also increased the odds of winning the jackpot to 146 million to 1.

Power Ball offers players nine ways to win money by matching up a series of white balls with a single red ball.  Five white balls are drawn with a single red ball.  If all six balls match up, the full jackpot is won.  Unlike other state lotteries, the odds of winning any sum of cash at Power Ball are much better, coming in at 36 to 1.
