It seems that every U.S. state is taking its
turn to pass legislation for legalizing slot machines. South Florida
went through the ringer not so long ago when the citizens of Dade County
voted on a large betting bill that would have brought thousands of slot
machines and video poker machines into racinos, Jai-alai destinations and
dog-racing tracks.
Now to vote on the issue will most likely be
Massachusetts, as state legislators are gearing up to pass a bill that would
introduce 2,000 slot machines in the state's four race tracks. Doing
so would generate betting licensing and tax revenue of nearly $450 million
for the state, which several lobbyists think would be mindless to pass up.
However, a block has been placed on the
legislation, and is now stirring up a rally from many of the local mayors
and House members who are in full support of bringing slot machines to race
tracks. Besides creating many jobs and stimulating the economy, the
revenue generated (which would be in the millions and far exceed the funds
that online betting sites and slots generate) would help to strengthen and
build public education and safety.
